Getting the Project Started

After promoting the SkY Flight program at the local high schools, our first participants met in a hangar at the Skagit Airport on May 2, 2024. Aviators, mechanics, and interested parties joined the students for support and as mentors. During the two hours, we learned the safety measures in place in a working environment. Each of us cut out and deburred metal to create our own name tag. The tag also records the initial we skills learned as indicated by a rivet. We are learning the following, with more skills to be added:

  • Dimensions and marking
  • Drilling tools
  • Debur tools
  • Rivets and riveting
  • Bolts/nuts/washers/screws/
  • Wrenches and sockets
  • Materials and inspection
  • Corrosion and Prevention
  • Aircraft structures
